John Cobb Obituary

John Glen Cobb , 57 of Alto, Texas passed away January 27, 2023, after a battle with cancer.  He was born on December 23, 1965.  He was the son of Aubrey Eugene and Carmelita Mae Cobb of Gay, West Virginia.  He is survived by many sisters and brothers and nieces and nephews.  Eileen Willis of West Virginia, Aubrey Eugene Cobb Jr. of Michigan, Cynthia Mace of Arizona, Suzette Kessel-Hardman of West Virginia, Stephanie Lynn Kite of Texas, and Kathleen Cobb of West Virginia. He was predeceased by his brother Hubert Dale “Rocky” Herdman, Vicki Cobb and Sandra Thomas.

The majority of his life was spent in Alto Texas he worked for Kalman Floor Company, Brown and Root and Alto Floor Company.  Seven years ago he started his own carpentry business working in and around Cherokee County.  There were many people in Alto that were clients.

John loved his music and his dogs.  He loved the people of Alto and everything that went along with that!  Friday Night Football was his favorite place to be followed by Monday Night Football with the Dallas Cowboys and talking about President Donald Trump which ran a close second.

John was always willing to help anyone that needed him, even after he became ill.  John had a heart as big as the Texas SKY and Texas was the only place he wanted to be.

As a young man he dreamed of having a houseful of children and raising them in Alo, but that was not to be so he “borrowed” his nieces and nephews and made them his.  John was a fierce competitor at Volleyball and Basketball playing in different Alto Tournaments  and at his side you could usually find Chris Lewis.  John loved basketball and during the past few years was blessed to be able to watch his great grandnephew, Creede Kessel of Slocum Texas play.  It was especially fun for John because he passed “the love of the game” to Creede.

John was not a perfect man; he was gruff and very opinionated.  Sometimes he could make you cry, but there was always an apology and an “I love you” that followed.  He was human and like all of us had faults.

When John became ill, he knew he would need help and so many stepped forward:  Richard Ramses stayed with him and drove him to Shreveport Hospital for Treatments along with so many others, Gary and Mike Dominy, Danny and Hannah Kessel, Jessica and Casey Vineyard, Charley and Jena Kessel, Dr. Dan Kessel, Linda Brooks, Allie Berryhill and his sister Kathy Cobb, their love and compassion will never be forgotten.  Kathy, his sister, returned the last two weeks of his life to stay with him twenty-four hours a day.  She and his niece Hannah Kessel were constantly there to give help, love and comfort.  Never leaving his side.

Greg and Shannon Duplichain were very compassionate and gave so much time and help.  Linda Brooks cooked for him, visited with him and gave him a mother’s love.  How fortunate he was, how Blessed by the Grace of God.

My brother was so in love with Alto and its people.  Nothing could take him from here, except the Hand of God.  Thank you to all who helped, all who prayed, all who cared for this one solitary man.  When Dan and I moved here in 1983, I wrote that this town was a town of Angels…..they are still here.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
