Jerry Smelley Obituary

Jerry Bob Smelley, 84, of Athens, Texas, passed away on April 1, 2026, as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Known lovingly as "Poppy" to his family, Jerry lived a life defined by loyalty, integrity, and an unwavering devotion to those he held dear.

Jerry was born on August 24, 1941, in Nacogdoches, Texas, to Walter Lee Smelley and Roseana Pittman Smelley. He grew up in a large, close-knit family and carried the values instilled in him during those formative years throughout the whole of his life. His strength of character, wisdom, and strong work ethic became the foundation upon which he built everything that mattered to him.

In 1959, Jerry married his beloved Nelda Jean Cawthon, beginning a partnership that would span more than six decades of shared joys, challenges, and abiding love. Together they welcomed their daughter, Lisa Renea, in 1961, and their son, Jeffrey Alan, in 1966. Jerry's proudest achievements were always his family. The arrival of his cherished granddaughter, Callie Jean, in 1990 brought new light into his life, and in later years he and Jean were blessed with the arrival of great-grandchildren Anthinye Jaed, Phoenix Rein, and Ryker Allan, each one adding immeasurable joy to his days.

Jerry was a man who gave generously of his time and talents to his community. He served with the Jacksonville Fire Department, was a member of the Civitan Club and the Masonic Lodge, and dedicated countless hours to the young people of his community by coaching little league baseball, refereeing football games, and officiating basketball games. His service to others reflected the same integrity and commitment he brought to every aspect of his life. In his earlier years, Jerry enjoyed fishing and hunting with his son. Later in life, he found peace working among his beloved rose bushes and spending cherished time with his grandchild and great-grandchildren.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeffrey Alan Smelley; his brothers Billy Eugene Smelley, James Ray Smelley, Donald Max Smelley, and Melton Joe Smelley; and his sisters Dollie Faye Smelley Labosky, Ruby Alene Smelley Hasley, Bobbie Louise Smelley Phillips, Gloria Jean Smelley, Lester Marie Smelley, and Christa Lynn Smelley.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Nelda Jean Cawthon Smelley of Athens, Texas; his daughter, Lisa Renea Smelley Murphy; his brother, Walter Lee Smelley Jr.; his granddaughter, Callie Jean; his great-grandchildren, Anthinye Jaed, Phoenix Rein, and Ryker Alan; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will carry his memory forward with love.

May Jerry find peace in the arms of the Lord, and may his family find comfort in the promise that love endures beyond this life.
