James William Hunter III

James William "Jim" Hunter III, 87, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at his home in Cushing, Texas.

Jim was born on February 15, 1939, in Port Arthur, Texas, to James William Hunter, Jr., and Odessa Bailey Hunter. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Texas A&M and Lamar universities. At age 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of lance corporal.  

In 1960, Jim married Rosa Catherine McDonald, and they raised their three children in Bridge City, Texas. Jim spent most of his career working for Allied Chemical (later Honeywell) as a plant controller, retiring after more than 30 years. After retirement, Jim and Rosa dedicated much of their time to their grandchildren, spending the first part of their retirement living along the Angelina River near Jasper and later moving to a rural property near Cushing.

Jim developed a passion for long-distance running in his 40s, competing in marathons and triathlon events and qualifying in his age group for the Boston Marathon. His interest in woodworking was lifelong, and he produced many beautiful pieces of furniture in his woodshop. Jim was also an avid reader and an active member of Faith Central Baptist Church.  

Preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas Hunter, Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rosa McDonald Hunter of Cushing, Texas; his children Lance Hunter, Lori Holt, and Joy Johns; his grandchildren Kathryn Hunter, Jake Hunter, Zach Hunter, Brooke Hunter, and Chase Hunter; and his great-grandchildren Theo Mott, Ada Mott, Jace Hunter, and Hannah Hunter.  

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Bobbitt Family Cemetery in Bronson, Texas, under the direction of Dickie Allen Funeral home, with Reverend DeWayne Holt Officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. There is no public visitation scheduled.
