George Eldridge Balch, 90,of Nacogdoches County, Texas passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023.
Born on March 14, 1933 to William W. Balch and Norma Strahan, George is preceded in death by his wife, Leola Gailley Balch; his son Jimmy Balch; his parents, William and Norma Balch, his brothers Cladron, Clamon, Norman, Leon, and Joel Balch; and sisters Willie Mae Balch Gibson, Euel Balch, and Louise Balch Mackechney.
He is survived by his sister Gloria Balch Bailey; daughter Linda Balch Schneider (Steven); grandchildren Jimmy Balch (Brandi), Tammie Balch Duhon (Craig), Daniel Shawn Sudnow (Damie), and Melanie Nicole Balch Ballew; great-grandchildren Lauren Balch, Alissa Duhon, Jay Balch, Ashlen Cheyenne Duhon, Savannah Ballew, Nicholas Ballew, and James Ryder Balch; great-great granddaughter Paisley Clanton; and companion Ms. Carolyn Anthony,and a host of extended family and friends. Nephews Tracy and Mark Mackechney helped to care for George as he aged.
George graduated from Chireno High School in 1949 at the age of sixteen and went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1951-1959. During his time in the Navy, including throughout the Korean War, George was a sailor aboard aircraft carriers, despite being unable to swim. After his time in the military, George worked for and retired from the Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad.
Throughout his life, George enjoyed traveling with friends and family. He especially loved going north to watch the leaves change colors each fall. Family vacations with his grandchildren were often to Texas State Parks, but George also traveled frequently with family throughout the country. He loved to learn new things in new places, and passed this love on to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A private family burial was held on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Blackjack Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.
