Obituary

Robert "Umpa" Stringer passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021 in Lufkin, Texas. Robert "Umpa" Stringer was born July 12, 1940 in Brookhaven, Mississippi to Flavil Stringer and "Ella-V" Bowman. In 1942 "Umpa" moved to Vidor, Texas where he stayed until 1969. He then moved to Houston. From 1985 he lived in East Texas where he lived until his passing. Upma was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. He was known for his distinctive voice ("no one's compared to his"). When he wasn't watching "Gunsmoke", "The Andy Griffith Show", some other westerns, the news or college football, he would be spending time with his grandchildren. His loved ones remember him as "such a good man with no bad bone in his body." He was very social and enjoying friends made him happy. Umpa was also affectionately known as the "master agitator". One of the last things he said was "when I pass I will go to be with my mom". He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Michael Stringer. He is survived by daughters  Rebecca Burch (husband Jerry) of Lufkin and Lisa Pope of Nacogdoches; brother Donald H. Stringer (wife Betty Lee) of Denton; and sister Geraldine Chesser (husband Don) of Beaumont.
